Ancient Ukrainian handmade dress made of homemade hemp fabric
Time of origin – about 1920's, place of origin – Poltava region, Ukraine.
Embroidered dress “vyshyvanka” is hand woven of homemade hemp threads and fabulously decorated. It is also hand tailored. Patterns of cross stitch embroidering are typical for Poltava region. The bottom of the shirt dress is also decorated with adorning embroidering ornament.
The shirt is used, but it is still in good vintage condition. Its fabric has no holes, but has a little pale aging spot- about 1 cm (please, contact us for more detailed photos).
As a natural textile, solid hemp fabric provides the warmth, softness and superior durability seldom found in other materials.
One can feel the depth of time when touching this rare item: every inch of hand woven fabric is unique, every cross stitch of gorgeous embroidering is the only.
In Ukraine dress “vyshyvanka” is used as a talisman to protect the person wearing it and to tell a story. Embroidery was used in vulnerable places on the garment where evil spirits could potentially enter the body: along the neckline, cuffs, shoulders, back and hem.
